Walney Island is situated just off the coast of Barrow in Furness, Cumbria. Walney Island Airport, was, as many small airfields were, an ex RAF base. Its roots can be traced all the way back to World War 1 when it was an airship station.

The site is currently operated by BAE Systems who, in 2018, started to expand the airport. This included the construction of a new Air Traffic Control Tower. Copperchase were successful in winning the contract to fit the new Air Traffic Control tower with our voice communications system, VCS, and METSYS weather observation system. In addition, Copperchase also replaced the airfield ground lighting control and monitoring system.

Copperchase had the luxury of not having to work around the current equipment, with the civil works and power source being taken care of by BAE Systems and its contractors. When the VCS and METSYS installation was complete, Coppperchase and BAE Systems moved the remaining equipment across to the new building.

Copperchase also installed their Aeronautical Ground Lighting Control & Monitoring System. This provided state of the art touch-screen and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) packages programmed to meet the individual needs of the airfield.
