Copperchase supply and install D-ATIS into the Cayman Islands
In August 2003, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman islands (CAA–CI) took steps to keep up with today’s industry technology.
To ensure that the Owen Roberts International Airport continued to provide safe and secure aviation services throughout the Cayman Islands, Copperchase were appointed to install the their Digital Automatic Terminal Information System (D-ATIS).
With the introduction of the Copperchase D-ATIS, aircraft in the Cayman Islands now have the ability to merge current MET and ATC data from the airfield and convert it into audible (voice) signals transmitted through various audio devices. The Copperchase D-ATIS also has the potential to provide the ATIS via the ARINC ACARS network, delivering the ATIS message direct to the on-board printer or MCDU.
The project, which was managed by CAA’s Head of Telecommunications, Kern Owens, was implemented in two phases. Firstly; a new fibre-optic backbone for the D-ATIS was installed, which provided the necessary connectivity, making the second phase (the implementation of the D-ATIS) operational from different positions.
Kern Owens states, “The Copperchase ATIS system performs in accordance with our required operational needs, and service levels. During installation, software upgrades to meet our specific operational requirements were conducted in an expeditious and satisfactory manner.” He continues, “The system is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and forms an essential part of the Air Traffic Control service at Owen Roberts International Airport.”
