Copperchase Ltd modernise ATC facilities at Coventry Airport

In February 2005, Copperchase Ltd successfully installed its ATC data system (FDMS, METSYS and ATIS) to assist with the automation of Coventry Airport’s ATC facilities.

Coventry Airport's ATC department realised that, in order to cope with the increased workload brought about by the recent expansion of scheduled flights to and from Coventry Airport, it would need to automate a number of its manually intensive systems and procedures. Copperchase, therefore, provided a low-cost, effective solution that accomplished these objectives and, furthermore, exceeded the ATC Department's expectations.

Having fully observed the ATC operations at Coventry and liaised with ATC staff, Copperchase established four main areas of focus for automation and were able to offer a suitable, low-cost ATC data systems solution comprising a number of Copperchase manufactured components:

  • Copperchase FDMS with Flight Progress Strip Printing, providing ATC staff (VCR and Approach) with a tool for managing Flight Plan information and generating Flight Progress Strips through its ability to maintain a dynamic database of flights;
  • Copperchase METSYS, which gathers and consolidates MET data from sensors around the airfield and other sources, and allows ATC staff and others to view distributed MET and Operational information at strategic locations around the airfield (VCR and RADAR rooms) on customised display pages;
  • Copperchase ATIS, which offers an Automatic Flight Information Service by merging the current MET and Operational ATC information on an airfield and converting it into an audible voice signal for radio transmission, thus reducing ATC staff workload in terms of ATIS message preparation.
