Copperchase answer call for urgent AFTN fix at Grand Cayman Airport

In November 2005, Copperchase Ltd (UK) successfully reinstated AFTN communications at Grand Cayman Airport following previous system degradation.

Cayman Airports recently contacted Copperchase as part of an upgrade RFT for the AFTN system and associated peripheral sub-systems. During this tender process, the AFTN system then in place at Grand Cayman suffered a final malfunction: the final in a series of defects that eventually led to Cayman Airports being without AFTN connectivity for several weeks.

Cayman Airports looked to Copperchase to provide a replacement solution that would restore AFTN communications with minimal delay. Within days, a Copperchase engineer was on site from the UK with the Copperchase AFGATE system, enabling AFTN communications over the MEVA network to FAA’s NADI to be restored. Both the Cayman Airports’ engineering staff and FAA staff provided significant support to test the system, which is providing full AFTN messaging capability to the Cayman Airports. Although the installed AFGATE system is intended for interim residency (until the completion of the entire AFTN and associated systems contract), it remains fully supported by Copperchase engineers.

Robert Shafer of Cayman Airports said, “Copperchase were able to respond very quickly to our ‘SOS’ call for reinstating AFTN communications. The interim solution continues to operate, perfectly reflecting the standards that we have come to expect of Copperchase installations."
